Systemic concepts in practice
In conjunction with constructivist approaches, systemic concepts, which are based on systems theory have long enjoyed great popularity due to their practical applicability. Nowadays, systemically-oriented consulting can be found alongside traditional fields such as family and educational counselling in many different areas including schools and educational institutions, care and rehabilitations centres, administration, social and case management, pastoral care and organisational consulting.
In order to be able to classify whether the systemic way of thinking offered at DISC basically corresponds to what you imagine, you are welcome to read the reading sample from the book "66 Gebote systemischen Denkens und Handelns in Management und Beratung" by Torsten Groth.
The German-language Master's programme is aimed at professionals in managing, consulting or organising positions, as long as they are active in the broad field of process consulting. In contrast to expert consulting, this is understood to mean the professional design of consulting processes which leave the responsibility for the content of the results achieved in the cooperation with the respective client system. In this sense, process consulting serves to methodically accompany clients on their way to discovering and realising their own new possibilities for solving problems or achieving a desirable change.
The areas of work of a consulting activity understood in this way can be very heterogeneous and range from organisational consulting to family counselling, from companies to kindergartens. Addressed are managers, project leaders, family helpers and pastoral workers.
Objective and degree
The distance learning programme provides the participants with the opportunity to acquire knowledge in the areas of professional consulting and support of controllable systems.
Graduates are awarded a diploma from the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, a certificate documenting conferment of the academic degree Master of Arts (M.A.) as well as an English-language Diploma Supplement.
The degree programme comprises ten compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules that focus on, for example
- Theory of social systems,
- Systemic consulting,
- Systemic methods and attitudes,
- Professionalism in consulting.
Access with a first degree
The application is open to persons with a first degree from any discipline. In addition, evidence of a relevant professional experience (see target group) of at least one year after the first degree must be provided. Further information can be found here.
Access without a first degree
Interested persons without a first degree have the opportunity to qualify for the programme by taking an aptitude test if they have sufficient relevant professional experience.
Schedule and organisation
The distance learnig programme in Systemic Consulting has a standard period of study of five semesters (part-time). Mandatory on-campus phases take place once or twice per semester over a (long) weekend in Kaiserslautern. All written module examinations are completed during mandatory on-campus phases.
A weekly commitment of around 15 to 20 hours is required to study the material, complete the mail-in exercises, successfully participate in two online tutorials, take an examination, submit a portfolio task, write a term paper and complete the Master's thesis (amongst others).
At a glance
At the moment, the tuition fees are EUR 1,290 per semester as well as the social contribution of currently EUR 102 per semester. The one-time fee for the Master's thesis is EUR 500. The tuition fees do not include travel and accommodation expenses or meal allowances during the on-campus phases. Only the social contribution is charged in the first and second semester after the end of the standard period of study. Tuition fees are reduced to 30 percent of the original fee as of the third semester exceeding the standard period of study; this does not apply to the Master's thesis fee. The tuition fees are exempted from German VAT and may be tax-deductible if the legal requirements are fulfilled. An installment payment request is possible, further information can be found here.

The aim of the aptitude test is to determine whether candidates with professional experience but no university degree have comparable skills and knowledge to candidates with a completed undergraduate degree. The application for admission to the aptitude test must be submitted to the Subdivision Distance Student Affairs.
The application period for the aptitude test ends on 31st January 2021. The online seminar for the aptitude test will then take place between 7th and 21st April 2021. The related oral examination will take place on a pre-arranged date in the period from 14th to 25th June 2021 or 12th to 23rd July 2021.

The distance learning programme Systemic Consulting is accredited to award the academic degree Master of Arts (M.A.). The agency responsible for the accreditation process is AQAS.
Distance programmes are basically defined by the fact that students do not physically attend the institution of higher education, instead the institution of higher education comes to them. Both programme organisation and the didactically prepared learning materials are based on the concept of independent learning: the learners are supported in taking personal responsibility for their own learning process by a teaching-learning arrangement that consists of a combination of self-learning materials, on-campus phases and online-based interactions in the online campus. Each programme has an own virtual learning environment within the online campus that accompanies the students for the duration of their course. During the on-campus phases, the students have the opportunity to consolidate and substantiate the self-taught content in the context of practical classes and group work and to further discuss their acquired skills and knowledge in consideration of current issues.
