Academic knowledge for medical physics and medical technology
In comparison to the distance learning Master's programme Medical Physics, this part-time Certificate programme is shorter but requires substantial prior knowledge of technology and natural sciences. A corresponding diploma or Master's degree issued by a university or institution of higher education is an admission requirement for this programme (in contrast to the distance learning programme Medical Physics that can be studied based on a Bachelor's degree).
The German-language distance learning programme is aimed at experienced graduates of technical/natural-scientific degree programmes who are not interested in an additional academic title (for the time being) but instead primarily want to acquire substantiated and expert knowledge in the areas medical physics and technology as well as in associated fields (such as, for example anatomy and physiology). The programme is also suited to individuals who are looking to break into the diverse field of medical physics and medical technology.
Objective and degree
The Certificate programme provides the participants with knowledge of medical physics and medical technology with a special emphasis on medical radiation physics, medical laser physics and medical imaging and image processing. The programme incorporates and separately certifies officially recognised courses on radiation protection for experts in medical physics (basic and specialised course), a course for laser protection officers and a course for persons responsible for regulatory compliance (PRRC).
Graduates are awarded a diploma from the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern as well as a university certificate.
The Certificate programme comprises 19 compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules that enable students to specialise in medical radiation physics, medical laser physics and medical imaging and image processing. The topics covered include
- Fundamentals of medicine,
- Legal framework conditions as well as function and use of medical technology and medical physics devices and procedures.
The teaching order follows, among other things, the training recommendations of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Physik e.V. (DGMP).
The application is open to persons with a first degree, at least equivalent to a Master's degree or a diploma, in engineering or physical-technical disciplines. Already after the "Vordiplom" or Bachelor's degree (at the latest to the completion of the distance learning programme) the Master's or diploma degree must be evidenced. Schedule and organisation
The Certificate programme Medical Physics and Engineering has a standard period of study of four semesters (part-time). Mandatory on-campus phases take place once per semester over a (long) weekend. The written module examinations are completed during mandatory on-campus phases.
A weekly commitment of around twelve to 15 hours is required to study the material, complete the mail-in exercises and take the examinations (amongst others).
At a glance
At the moment, the tuition fees are EUR 590 per semester as well as the social contribution of currently EUR 102 per semester. The tuition fees do not include travel and accommodation expenses or meal allowances during the on-campus phases. Only the social contribution is charged in the first and second semester after the end of the standard period of study. Tuition fees are reduced to 30 percent of the original fee as of the third semester exceeding the standard period of study. The tuition fees are exempted from German VAT and may be tax-deductible if the legal requirements are fulfilled. An installment payment request is possible, further information can be found here.

The Certificate programme's scientific directors are Prof. Dr. René Beigang (TU Kaiserslautern) and Prof. Dr. Andreas König (TU Kaiserslautern). The Certificate programme Medical Physics and Engineering is taught in cooperation with the Landeskrankenhaus Feldkirch, the Medical Faculty of Saarland University, the Saarland University Medical Center and the Westpfalz-Klinikum.
The Certificate programme has undergone an internal quality assurance process within the TU Kaiserslautern's system accreditation.
Distance programmes are basically defined by the fact that students do not physically attend the institution of higher education, instead the institution of higher education comes to them. Both programme organisation and the didactically prepared learning materials are based on the concept of independent learning: the learners are supported in taking personal responsibility for their own learning process by a teaching-learning arrangement that consists of a combination of self-learning materials, on-campus phases and online-based interactions in the online campus. Each programme has an own virtual learning environment within the online campus that accompanies the students for the duration of their course. During the on-campus phases, the students have the opportunity to consolidate and substantiate the self-taught content in the context of internships, tutorials as well as lectures and to further discuss their acquired skills and knowledge in consideration of current issues.
